Functional fitness assessment first step towards ending pain
October 1, 2002

by Harry Hall

This article is a continuation of the Persistent Pain article in the October issue of ITR. For complete details on the functional fitness assessment, pick up a copy of the October issue of ITR.

The functional fitness assessment is a relatively new program that can greatly help runners prevent and treat injuries, as well enhance performance.

The first step is to get assessed, which will help determine current and potential problems. A series of exercises/stretches will be assigned, which the athlete will incorporate into his or her running program.

"The assessments can help any runner," says Tammy Hischke, personal trainer and functional fitness coordinator at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas, "identify tightness or recognize balance problems."

The follow-up schedule, like the initial assessment, should be left up to the individual.

"Some may only need an annual or semi-annual follow-up," says Hischke, "and help regain balance in the joints."

"This is a great addition to the whole wellness/fitness puzzle."

Ms. Hischke earned her FA certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and began the program earlier this year.
