The functional fitness assessment is a relatively new program
that can
greatly help runners prevent and treat injuries, as well enhance
performance. The first step is to get assessed, which will help determine
current and
potential problems. A series of exercises/stretches will be
assigned, which
the athlete will incorporate into his or her running program.
"The
assessments can help any runner," says Tammy Hischke, personal
trainer and
functional fitness coordinator at the Cooper Aerobics Center in
Dallas,
"identify tightness or recognize balance problems."
The follow-up schedule, like the initial assessment, should be
left up to
the individual.
"Some may only need an annual or semi-annual follow-up," says
Hischke,
"and help regain balance in the joints."
"This is a great addition to the whole wellness/fitness puzzle."
Ms. Hischke earned her FA certification from the National
Academy of Sports
Medicine, and began the program earlier this year.
