Interviews from the Motorola Austin Marathon
February 16, 2003
by Lance Phegley
Andrzej Krzyscin -- men's winner
Krzyscin defended his 2002 title after a stirring battle
with American Jimmy Hearld. Krzyscin retraces the race, plus
talks about his upcoming race plans. Jimmy Hearld -- men's runner-up
Most runners would be a little upset after finishing second
in a major marathon by only 10 seconds, but not Jimmy Hearld.
Course scoring a seven-minute PR will help ease the pain. Hearld
discusses his race, the wind, treadmill training, and just what
one does after reaching the rarified air of a 2:12 marathon. Silvia Skortsova -- women's winner
Nothing like waiting until the very last second to claim a
26.2-mile race. Skortsova eked out a victory at the Motorola
Austin Marathon by less than four-tenths of a second. She recaps
her race, discusses when she felt she had the race won, and
outlines her plans for upcoming races.
Larisa Timchia -- women's runner-up
Timchia came up just a hair short a the finish line, where
she was edged out of the top spot by less than four-tenths of a
second (for stat geeks, that translates to .015 seconds per mile
over the course of a marathon).
