The latest addition to the 2002 Compaq Houston Marathon is the
Compaq Runner Rewards Program, a free membership benefit created
to give registered participants of the marathon, the EP 13.1-
miler and the Uptown Park 4 access to coaching expertise and
events leading up to race weekend in January. The first event for members will be a "Coaches Corner" session
with coaching experts Sean Wade and Jon Warren, co-founders of
the Houston-based Kenyan Way training program, and Gary
Mulvihill, head coach of the Runner's High Club. The coaches
will discuss training milestones for all three Compaq Houston
Marathon weekend events and offer additional training tips.
This session is the first in a series of Coaches Corners, which
will feature leading coaches from several local running programs.
The first Coaches Corner will take place Sunday, Nov. 11, 4-6
p.m., at Uptown Park - The Official Athlete's Village of the
Compaq Houston Marathon, located at Loop 610 at Post Oak Blvd in
the Galleria area.
In addition to coaching guidance, Compaq Runner Rewards Program
members will receive e-mail newsletters, a members-only T-shirt
and have the opportunity to win Compaq prizes and sample free
offerings from marathon sponsors. Race participants
automatically become members of the Compaq Runner Rewards
Program by registering for any of the three Compaq Houston
Marathon weekend events.
"As race weekend nears, we want to generate as much interest and
excitement as we can among our runners," said Steve Huey, vice
president, community affairs and sponsorships, Compaq.
"The Compaq Runner Rewards program is part of our continuing
effort to provide benefits to race participants throughout the
year and begin the countdown to Jan. 20."
Runners may register for any of the races on the Compaq Houston
Marathon Web site - compaqhoustonmarathon.com. Registration
forms also are available at most local athletic clubs, YMCAs and
the Tennis Center at Memorial Park.
An executive team of volunteers administers the Compaq Houston
Marathon, with an additional 5,000 volunteers who assist on race
weekend. The race is the city's largest single-day sporting
event and is a member of Running USA, a nonprofit group devoted
to improving the status of road racing in the United States.
The 2002 event will be Compaq's second year to sponsor the
Houston Marathon.
