The fun run that got flooded out by Tropical Storm Allison last
year is back on the summer schedule of running events. The
Houston Gay and Lesbian Pride 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held at
7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8.
"We're all dried out," said race director Mac Crone. "And the
Houston Montrose Athletic Association (HMAA), which sponsors the
fun run, has barred Tropical Storm Allison and all of her
friends from registering for this year's race."
Applications for the race are now available on the Internet, by
mail and at several locations around Houston.
The 2002 event will benefit AssistHers, a volunteer organization
that provides in-home support and care to lesbian women with
chronic or disabling illnesses.
The 3.1-mile race along Memorial Drive between Sabine Street and
Waugh Drive is an official part of the Houston Gay & Lesbian
Pride 2002 celebration in June. Trophies will be awarded to the
first overall male and female winners, the first masters male
and female winners, and the first wheelchair winner. The top
five males and females in age groups 30-34, 35-39, and 40-44
will receive awards. The top three males and females in all
other age groups will receive awards.
The race will conclude with a party on Sabine Bridge and
presentation of awards and door prizes. All participants will
receive a T-shirt.
An early-registration fee of $15 is available until May 31.
After that date, the fee is $18.
