Garcia, Riddle Win USA 50K Trail Titles at HUFF
January 9, 2002

At the USA 50K Trail Championships, the temperatures never rose above 20 degrees and 20 mph wind dropped wind chills close to zero, 2001 USA 100K champion Jim Garcia, 43, of Westford, Mass. needed a come-from-behind effort in the last 5K to claim the gold medal over Charles Hubbard, 40, of Bloomington, Minn. His 3:39:13 outpaced Hubbard's 3:41:02 silver-medal effort on a 50K course that is actually measured at 32.4 miles. Defending HUFF - Huntington Ultra Frigid Fifty - champion, Mark Godale, 31, Streetsboro, OH placed third in 3:43:52.

In the women's race, Anne Riddle, 35, from Asheville, NC ran much of the first 20+ miles only a few strides ahead of Ann Heaslett, 38, Madison, WI. Riddle who - like Garcia - also won the 2001 USA 100K crown would cushion her lead in the final lap of this three-lap race around the Huntington Reservoir, finishing with a gold medal in 4:16:31 and holding off Heaslett who finished second in 4:20:49. Anong Pustow, 37, from Louisville, KY showed strong reserve in taking home the bronze, in 4:30:57.
