Beat the heat this summer with Kenyan Way
May 8, 2002

Whoever thought you could improve your running during the Houston summer? First-time participants in Kenyan Way's Beat the Heat program have improved an average of three minutes over 5K!

Now in it's fourth year, the Beat the Heat training program is a unique, three-days-a-week summmer fitness program designed for all abilities and all ages. The program utilizes the training principles developed by and for many of the greatest runners in the world. These principles are converted to a managable, fun, and unique means of getting fit. This program is proven to improve your running ability. It is not just running, it is a total body workout. It is tough. It is demanding. It is fun.

The Beat the Heat program has achieved results utilizing the following:
-- Each day of the week emphasizes a different training method. Each session is followed by a short muscular strength workout.
-- The training will take place at a variety of locations along Buffalo Bayou in Houston. The group meet at the same starting point every workout.
-- It's an ideal way to prepare for a fall or winter marathon.
-- Training schedules are provided.
-- Dramatic increases in performance were documented from previous classes.
-- The program can be started any time. Applications will be accepted throughout the summers - numbers permitting.
-- The training is done almost exclusively on grass, thus there is a very low rate of overuse injuries.

Coaches for the program are Sean Wade (2:10 marathon, '96 Olympian) and Jon Warren (2:15 marathon, head cross country and track coach at Rice University).

The Beat the Heat program begins May 20 and runs through August 9 (M-W-F, from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.). Cost for the entire program is $120, or $5 per session.
