Magness miles 4:01 at Prefontaine Classic
May 27, 2003

by Lance Phegley

Rice University signee Steve Magness toured the legendary Hayward Field in slightly over four minutes in the men's mile at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday.

Kenya's Bernard Lagat won the Bowerman Men's Mile -- named for the legendary coach Bill Bowerman. Lagat's 3:50.21 established a world-leading mark for the 2003 season. Canada's Kevin Sullivan was second in 3:53.34 and Alex Kipchirchir (Kenya) finished third in 3:53.73.

Magness (left), a senior at Klein Oak H.S., turned in the fastest mile ever by a Texas schoolboy with his 4:01.02 finish. He established a new Texas H.S. 1600 record earlier this season, then followed that up with a state meet record in the event with his victory in the 5A 1600.
