Former Olympians, World Championship team members and NCAA
champions highlight the athletes who will represent the United
States in San
Antonio, Texas, at the 2002 POWERade North America, Central
America &
Caribbean (NACAC) Under-25 Track & Field Championships, USA
Track & Field
announced on Friday. More than 300 athletes from 32 countries
are expected
at the international regional meet August 9-11, 2002.Hosted by the San Antonio Sports Foundation, the competition
will feature 45
track and field events and will take place at E.M. Stevens
Stadium on the
campus of Trinity University. The event is sanctioned by the
NACAC
organization and USA Track & Field.
Leading the U.S. delagation will be Olympic 110H silver medalist
Terrence
Trammell. A six-time NCAA champion in just three years of
competition at the
University of South Carolina, Trammell is the 2002 USA Indoor
60m champion
and the 2001 World Indoor 60H champion.
A 2000 Olympian, James Carter is the 2002 U.S. 400H champion
(48.12). He ran
his first sub-49 clocking at the 2000 Olympic Trials in the 400H
semifinals
(48.87) and finished fourth in the 400H Olympic finals in Sydney
with a
personal best time of 48.04. Carter is a 1999 graduate of Hampton
University.
Brianna Glenn is the 2001 NCAA 200m and long jump champion from
the
University of Arizona. She is the 2002 U.S. Long Jump champion
(6.46M/21-2.5) and is also a member of the 4x100m relay pool in
San Antonio.
Glenn graduated from Arizona in 2002.
Yuliana Perez has risen to the top of U.S. triple jumping in
less than two
years, She is the 2002 U.S. Outdoor champion (14.20m/46-7.25)
and was
runner-up in 2001. She placed fourth at the 2001 World
University Games and
competed for Team USA at the 2001 World Championships in
Edmonton. She is
the 2001 National Junior College Champion at the triple jump and
the long
jump. Perez currently attends Pima (Ariz.) Community College.
The American collegiate record holder in the 60m hurdles indoors
(7.92) and
2002 Big Ten Female Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year,
Danielle
Carruthers will compete in the 100H in San Antonio. At the 2001
World
University Games, Carruthers finished 8th in the 100H finals
(13.53).
Carruthers attends the University of Indiana.
Brenda Taylor competed at the 2001 World Championships in
Edmonton, Canada
for Team USA, where she was a semifinalist. She was the 2001
NCAA 400H
champion and was awarded the 2000-01 Honda Award as the top
women's
collegiate athlete in the sport of track & field. At the 2002
U.S.
Championships, Taylor finished third in 57.62. She is a 2001
graduate of
Harvard University.
Ron Bramlett is yet another youth hurdle star for Team USA. The
2001 NCAA
110m hurdles champion for his alma mater of Alabama, Bramlett
was fourth at
the World University Games. He owns a personal best of 13.43
seconds.
This is only the second NACAC Under-25 Track & Field
Championships; The
first competition was held in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2000.
