The #1 ranked University of Colorado Buffaloes lived up to
expectations
Monday in winning the NCAA Division I Cross Country men's
championship for
the first time in the school's history. The Championships were
held at
Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.
With his second place finish (29:06), junior Jorge Torres led
the Buffaloes
to the team win with a total of 90 points, edging Stanford
University by a
single point. Three-time defending team champion Arkansas was
third with 118
points, followed by Northern Arizona (193) and Wisconsin (245).
Eastern Michigan's Boaz Chboiywo of Kenya won the men's race in
28:47. Other
top finishers were Alistair Cragg of Arkansas (3rd-29:10),
Dathan Ritzenhein
of Colorado (4th-29:11) and Luke Watson of Notre Dame (5th-
29:19). Other
notable finishers included Ryan Shay of Notre Dame (6th-29:23),
Donald Sage
of Stanford (7th-29:24), Wisconsin's Matt Tegenkamp (8th-29:26),
and Josh
Spiker (9th-29:29). University of Michigan freshman phenom Alan
Webb was
11th in 29:38.
Brigham Young captured the women's team title with a total of 62
points,
followed by North Carolina State (148), Georgetown (180),
Arizona (194) and
Stanford with 206 points. The BYU women also captured the
women's team title
in 1997 and 1999.
Arizona's Tara Chaplin captured the women's individual crown in
20:24.
Georgia Tech's Renee Metivier was the runner-up in 20:31,
followed by
Stanford's Lauren Fleshman (3rd-20:35), North Carolina State's
Kristin Price
(4th-20:36) and Michaela Manova of Brigham Young, who led the
national
champs with a fifth-place finish in 20:42.
Other top placers included Virginia's Jennifer Owens (6th-
20:43), Brigham
Young's Jessie Kindschi (7th-20:49), Colorado's Molly Austin
(8th-20:51),
Brigham Young's Tara Northcutt (9th-20:55) and Boston College's
Maggie
Guiney (10th-20:56).
