Record $100K First Place Prize at 2003 ING New York City Marathon

The male and female champions of the 2003 ING New York City
Marathon on Sunday, November 2, will win a race record $100,000
and a Smart Car, it was announced Tuesday by race director and
New York Road Runners president and CEO Allan Steinfeld.The guaranteed first-place prize of $100,000 equals the largest
in the sport. It is double what the winners received in the 1999
New York City Marathon and is a $20,000 increase from last year. The 2003 ING New York City Marathon has a total guaranteed prize
purse of $532,500. It includes $14,000 to be awarded in the
Wheelchair Division Presented by Avis. Time bonuses will be paid
in excess of the guaranteed prize purse. Smart Car is a business unit of DaimlerChrysler. Rodgers Rop (2:08:07) and Joyce Chepchumba (2:25:56), both of
Kenya, won the 2002 NYC Marathon. In 2001, course records were
set by Tesfaye Jifar of Ethiopia (2:07:43) and Margaret Okayo of
Kenya (2:24:21).
