The male and female champions of the 2003 ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, will win a race record $100,000 and a Smart Car, it was announced Tuesday by race director and New York Road Runners president and CEO Allan Steinfeld.

The guaranteed first-place prize of $100,000 equals the largest in the sport. It is double what the winners received in the 1999 New York City Marathon and is a $20,000 increase from last year.

The 2003 ING New York City Marathon has a total guaranteed prize purse of $532,500. It includes $14,000 to be awarded in the Wheelchair Division Presented by Avis. Time bonuses will be paid in excess of the guaranteed prize purse.

Smart Car is a business unit of DaimlerChrysler.

Rodgers Rop (2:08:07) and Joyce Chepchumba (2:25:56), both of Kenya, won the 2002 NYC Marathon. In 2001, course records were set by Tesfaye Jifar of Ethiopia (2:07:43) and Margaret Okayo of Kenya (2:24:21).
