Dallas-FW women took the top three places in the Palo Duro Trail 50-Mile race held October 20 inside Palo Duro Canyon near Amarillo. Barbara Hitzfeld, 40, of Fort Worth, won in a time of 9:36, while Linda Musil, 50, of Dallas, was second in 9:46. Letha Cruthirds, 48, of Bedford, finished third in 10:22, two weeks after running the Arkansas Traveller 100-Mile in 21:57.

Dave Dannels of Coppell finished fourth among the men in 9:02, while wife Stacy was first female and third overall in the 20K event, in 1:54. Defending 50-mile champions Scott Eppelman and Kelly Foley, also of Coppell, opted to run the 50K distance side-by-side as a warm-up for their October 27 wedding.

There were a record 150 runners from as far away as California in the three events. Temperatures reached 83 degrees on the scenic, but hilly and mostly unshaded course.

In other ultra news, Max Roycroft, 37, of Rowlett, and Butch Allmon, 46, of Fort Worth, finished fourth and fifth overall in 22:18 at The Heartland 100-Mile in Kansas on October 13, only one week after running the Arkansas Traveller together in 20:57.
