SMU to drop men's track and field
February 20, 2004

In an apparent Title IX casualty, a Southern Methodist University (SMU) athletics committee approved the recommendation to drop the men's track and field program, effective at the end of this season.

SMU has won three national championships in track and field, including both the indoor and outdoor titles in 1983. They also won the 1986 outdoor title. In addition, the program has been a perennial top-10 finisher at the NCAA championships.

The Board of Trustees is expected to approve the elimination of the program today. In addition, the men's cross country team will also get the ax.
