SMU to drop men's track and field

In an apparent Title IX casualty, a Southern Methodist
University (SMU) athletics committee approved the recommendation
to drop the men's track and field program, effective at the end
of this season.SMU has won three national championships in track and field,
including both the indoor and outdoor titles in 1983. They also
won the 1986 outdoor title. In addition, the program has been a
perennial top-10 finisher at the NCAA championships. The Board of Trustees is expected to approve the elimination of
the program today. In addition, the men's cross country team
will also get the ax.
