Volunteers needed for Houston Senior Olympics
March 31, 2002
The 2002 Houston Senior Olympics is in need of volunteers to
help out at
several different sports. For those of you unfamiliar with the
Senior
Olympics, it is a community wide event for any athlete 50 years
and older
consisting of 21 different sports held in venues around the
city. It is
held annually - 2002 being its 14th year. Competitors who win
in their age
bracket, get the opportunity to compete in the State Olympics.
From there,
they get to compete in the National Senior Olympics which is
held every two
years. Houston averages around 1000 competitors each year. The
competitors come not only from Houston and its surrounding
areas, but from
out of state as well. The competitors are always so
appreciative of any
help and support that they are given.
The sports that are in need of volunteers are:
1) April 15th - 5K and 10K Road Race - at Bear Creek Park
beginning at 7
am
2) April 16th - Cycling - at Bear Creek Park beginning at 7
am
3) April 19th - Basketball - 3 on 3 - at the JCC on S.
Braeswood beginning
at 8 am
4) April 21st - Track and Field - at Rice University -
beginning at 7 am.
Houston Parks and Rec is one of the Senior Olympics major
sponsors. They
are usually able to send quite a number of volunteers each year
from their
staff. Due to staff cutbacks, that is not the case this year.
