Summer Kick-Off Run resultsA record number of 719 entrants registered for the Summer Kick-Off Fun Run
at Clear Creek High School in League City Saturday, June 8, 2002. Over 400
finished the 5K Run. This family-oriented event attracted participants from
age 1 to 80 in the 5K run, 3K walk, and kid's K run.
Bryan Williams of Dayton, Texas returned to the Summer Kick-Off Fun Run and
successfully defended his 5K first place victory of last year. He led the
field with a time of 16:13. Bryan was followed by his twin brother, Ryan
(16:46) and brother Daniel (17:43) who was eighth place over all. Ryan and
Daniel both took first place in their age groups. The Williams brothers'
father, Herman, finished the 5K with a time of 24:41 that was good enough to
place fifth in his age group.
Elliott Young of Houston led the 5K women with a time of 19:56. This was
her first appearance at the Summer Kick-Off Fun Run.
The Summer Kick-Off Fun Run took on an international flavor with a family of
runners from England. The men's master's division (over 40) was won by
Philip Kendrick who was on a family vacation from Llandringpod, England.
His time was a brisk 17:13 which placed him fourth overall. He found the
Summer Kick-Off Fun Run web site before leaving home and decided to make it
part of his trip. His daughter Emily came in second in her 15-19 5K age
group. Sophie joined her father in the winner's circle with a first place
finish in the Kid's K run edging out sister Polly who came in second.
In keeping with the family atmosphere Deb Clifford of Galveston was the 5K
women master's winner with a time of 22:29 and her daughter, Erika, placed
second in the 6 year old and under kid's K age group. Deb has participated
in many sports in the past. Now she concentrates on competing in many runs
in the greater Houston area. She was just 6 seconds off the master's
winning pace in last year's Summer Kick-Off Run.
An enthusiastic group of children aged 12 and under competed in the kid's K
run. The brother duo of Chris and Matthew Baca of Lake Charles finished
first in their age groups in the Kid's K run. They were joined by age group
winners Tiffany Tigges, Sophia Campos, and John Almendarez.
Great refreshments were served to the soothing sounds of Juan Manuel's new
CD special release for the Summer Kick-Off Fun Run. Khambrel Marshall of
Channel 2 News started each event and presented the trophies and medals to
the winners at the post-race party held in the school courtyard.
The run is held annually in memory of James Glenn, a Clear Creek High School
student who died while attending and playing football at Texas A&M in 1991.
The James Glenn Foundation proudly presented $7,000 in scholarships to
students attending Clear Creek, Clear Lake, and Clear Brook High Schools
this year. The recipients were David Cho, Brenna Rackham (whose family
participated in this year's walk), Rachel Christensen (a former Summer
Kick-Off Run Volunteer), Anthony Maggio, Connie Hsiao, Amber Bennett, and
Jeremy Holzback. The continued success of the run is due to the loyal
support of the volunteers, many who were friends of James.
