Accolades in the sports world often come in the form of
exorbitant
paychecks or in flowing prose from the self-effacing mouths of
pampered,
egotistical athletes. So it's rare, and quite pleasing to also
hear them
coming from the mouths of fellow runners, who line up to do
battle in
the grueling world of ultra marathoning.
Following Mark Godale's overall come-from-behind win in the
Sunmart
Texas Trail Endurance Runs 50-mile race at Huntsville State Park
on Dec.
8, the runner-up, Hal Koerner of Parker, Colo., had some words
of praise
for Godale's abilities and his work ethic.
"When you've got someone behind you, who is the 1999 Ultra
Runner of
the Year, you know that he's always going to come back on you,"
said
Koerner, the early leader in the race. "He just made a great
charge,
coming out here his third time at Sunmart, and when you know he
can run
sub-6:00 minute pace, you've got him in the back of your mind."
Godale, who finished third in the Sunmart 50-Mile last year, and
second
in 1999, finished first in the 2001 race in 6:03:52. Koerner,
25, was
second place behind Godale in a time of 6:13:19.
Tania Pacev, 42, of Littleton, Colo., was the women's winner in
7:07:13, followed by Sally Brooking, 42, of Marietta, Ga., who
claimed
the runner-up slot in 7:45:53.
Albina Gallyamova, a 37-year-old Russian native living in Austin,
claimed the womens 50K in the course record time of 3:41:40. The
old
record was 3:54:14, which was set in 1999 by Luanne Park. Liza
Hunter-Galvan was second behind Gallyamova in 3:42:39.
Gallyamova's fellow Russian countryman Sergey Karasev won the
mens 50K
in 3:13:11, followed by Jim Harrington, 36, of Marquette, Mich.,
in
3:27:44.
On a much more somber note, one runner suffered an apparent heart
attack during the event and passed away. The thoughts and
prayers of the entire ITR staff go out to the family and
friends of Fritz Kauffmann.
