After a thunderous night of massive downpours and hail as large
as three inches in diameter pounding within miles of the third
annual Pilgrim Pride Texas Roundup, Texas Governor Rick Perry
and the city of Austin awoke to almost perfect running
conditions at 63F. More than 5,500 runners took part in the 10K/5K, which is part
of the Governor's Fitness Plan for the State of Texas. Last
year, the Governor ran with the Dutchess of York, Sarah
Ferguson. This time he opted for the 5K run and ran with 2005
Pilgrim Pride Texas Roundup 10K winner and three-time Olympian
Colleen DeReuck.
This year's race was dominated by a pair of Kenyans training in
the Chapel Hill area of North Carolina. Benson Cheruiyot, 23,
and Lineth Chepkurui, 18, ran 29:13 and 34:02 nearly
missing "The City of Live Music" records. Cheruiyot pushed
hard, passing three miles in 14:11, but was slowed in mile five
on his way to victory.
In the women's race, Chepkurui battled with fellow countrymate
Florence Jepkosgei, passing 5K in 16:30, and heading on to a
course record. Albert Okemwa, 40, won the overall masters males
crown in 34:39 and newly-minted master Beth Gatling claimed the
women's hardware in 40:52. All winners received a years' worth
of chicken products from Pilgrim Pride.
The accompanying Pilgrim Pride Texas Roundup 5K was won by
Bernard Manirakiza in 15:19 and Lige Stewardson in 19:26
Other noteables included 83-year-old Jim Southard of Austin, who
turned in a 35:14 for the 5K.
