Organizers of the Borden Uptown 8K in Dallas are hoping to
hand
out a check for $10,000 for a world record at Minyard 8K.
Over
3,000 will line up for the 8:15 a.m. start and then line the
street to cheer for the 50 elite and elite locals. One of the top female entrants is Minori Hayakari (JAP), an
employee of Koka Woman's Educational Institute and the
Asian
record holder of the womans steeplechase at 9:41.21.
Minori won her first Japanese championship at 1500m back
in
1996, then last year with the inclusion of the steeple for
women, she had new motivation. She debuted at the
Stanford
Classic, and achieved her "B" standard for 2005 World
Outdoor
Championships in late May at the Minnesota Distance
Classic. She
has a PR of 15:11 at 5K and should be challenged by
Alvetina
Ivanova (RUS), two time second place finisher at the
Minyard 8K,
Tatiana Chulakh (RUS),Luminita Gogirlea (ROM) and an
American
soil debutant of Rebbi Koech (KEN), who has trained with
notable
Brother Colm in Iten, Kenya since 2003. Rebbi is the sister
of
1992 Olympian William Koech, who encouraged his sister
to start
running after having finished Kenyan College and no
prospects of
employment. She started running under Brother Colm and
has raced
in Europe, with a road PR 32:26 and will working with
Coach
Dieter Hogen for the upcoming USA road season.
The men's field has assembled three sub-13:01 5K, being
led by
world record holder, Sammy Kipketer (KEN). Sammy is the
defending Commonwealth Games at 5000 and earlier in
2006
finished second at the Kenyan Armed Forces Cross Country
Championships and fifth at the Kenyan Championships.
Kipketer
has run 12:52/27:04
Training partner of Sammy's, the silver medalist in the World
Cross Country Short Course in 2005 and an Olympic 5000
finalist
in 2004, Abrahim Chebii (KEN), also brings PRs of
12:52/26:49 to
the Minyard 8000. Chebii and Kipketer have come to Dallas
to
take down the current record of 22:03 achieved by Peter
Githuka.
With a 13:01 5K PR, Shadrock Kosgei (KEN) who is now
training
with Chebii and Kipketer under the tutledge of Dieter Hogen.
All
three men ran in the 2006 Kenyan World Cross Country 4K
trials
finishing 11, 12 and 14th. They were truly disappointed with
their results coming from a very very muddy Ngong Race
Course.
The record maybe in jeopardy as the Dallas weather forcast
will
provide no rain, no wind and ideal tempetures at 52F.
