Fireworks explode in the background as the runners break from
the starting line.

Jynocel Basweti was the fastest finisher on the day, taking
home the overall male title in 2:14:02.

Derek Williamson (leading) outdueled Andrzej Krzyscin to the
tape in the accompanying half marathon.

Winner in the "Worst Motivational Sign Seen Alongside the
Marathon Course" contest -- but definitely one that drew a lot
of chuckles.

Michael Defee (right) outleaned Bobby Holcombe at the tape.
Both were timed in 2:37:55 and finished in the top twenty.

Austin's own Desiree Ficker finished second overall in the
women's marathon and qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials
Marathon.

Half marathoners got a warm finish line greeting from the Texas
State Fair mascot.

Some 12,000 runners -- split essentially evenly between the
half marathon and marathon -- toured the Lone Star State's
capital city.

Two finishers share a post-race hug after completing the
marathon in under four-and-a-half hours.

Many marathoners completed their first-ever finish, enjoying
the cool weather conditions.
